The Jennings contacted Kitchens International with a view to increase storage and modernise their dated kitchen that suited their lifestyle. The previous kitchen had been installed when they moved into the 3 bedroomed apartment in New Town, Edinburgh 15 years prior. As keen cooks and bakers, the Jennings wanted to create a space they could both be in at the same time, as well as the option to relax and sit in the kitchen together. They also wanted to incorporate the utility space into the kitchen as the existing one opened straight onto the kitchen.
KI Designer, Samantha Dack, wanted to tie the kitchen in with the rest of the home renovation to give it a more modern feel. The clients were keen to go with a darker palette that incorporated metallic and industrial textures, whilst retaining the existing floor, so this needed to be considered within the design.
By utilising space from the adjacent bathroom, the kitchen was expanded to allow the new slide away breakfast and drinks area without compromising space. It also concealed access to the utility area which allowed the space to flow better.
To keep the flow of this living kitchen, extra storage was incorporated to ensure all the kitchen elements could be hidden away and the space did not feel cramped. By moving the dining area, the kitchen island could be extended to include breakfast bar seating without losing any open space. The new design allows the space to flow more naturally and allows the Jennings to both be in the kitchen and not feel in each other’s way.
We are delighted with how the feature wall turned out, as the space was tight, and we needed to work with the utility opening and the restricted space we had for the slide away unit. The final look is exactly how we imagined, the visuals and the finished product are not far away from each other.
