As part of a wider extension project in the heart of Edinburgh, Mr & Mrs Stevenson came to us with a clear vision: to transform their kitchen into a spacious, open-plan kitchen and living area that could adapt effortlessly to both everyday family life and entertaining. As keen hosts, they wanted a layout that would feel sociable and inviting, while also offering the practicality needed for busy daily routines.
Maximising the available space was a key priority, with a focus on clean lines, smart storage solutions, and a layout that allowed the kitchen to flow seamlessly into the surrounding living zones. The design needed to feel open and connected.
The Stevenson's were drawn to a contemporary style with an industrial edge. They envisioned a calm, minimal space that incorporated raw textures like concrete, balanced with soft lighting and light accents that compliment abundance of natural light.
By incorporating clean lines and a harmonious blend of materials, our design team were able to optimise this space without compromising on style or functionality. By reconfiguring the layout and introducing an island, we were able to enhance the flow and and provide additional storage and breakfast bar seating. This strategic alteration not only opened up the area but also created a more inviting environment for both cooking and entertaining.
Texture plays a pivotal role in elevating the kitchen's design. The use of concrete cabinetry on the island and tall housings introduces an industrial edge that contrasts beautifully with the smooth mohair cabinetry. The raw, tactile quality of the concrete adds a sense of authenticity and modernity, grounding the space while maintaining a refined, contemporary feel. This thoughtful interplay of textures creates visual depth and a sensory experience that balances the kitchen’s vibrant character.
A pocket door unit provides discreet storage for everyday appliances including the toaster, microwave, and coffee machine. When closed, the unit blends seamlessly with the surrounding cabinetry, preserving the kitchen’s clean, uncluttered aesthetic. When open, it reveals a highly functional work zone, complete with power points and practical shelving—designed for ease of use without compromising style.
