As part of a major renovation project on a traditional Georgian property in the heart of Edinburgh, Mr and Mrs Bell approached KI looking to transform their kitchen into a contemporary, family-friendly space that would serve as the heart of their home. Their vision was for a kitchen that balanced clean, modern lines with a warm, welcoming atmosphere — a space that would feel calm, open, and connected to the rest of the house.
This kitchen transforms a traditionally compartmentalised space into an open plan hub of modern family life. Designed with a focus on spatial efficiency, tactile finishes, and clean lined aesthetics, the kitchen achieves a delicate balance between practical usability and visual impact.
At the heart of the kitchen lies a generously sized island that serves multiple roles — food preparation and cooking zone, informal dining space, and a storage hub. Integrated power outlets are conveniently positioned for easy access while prepping or cooking, and a built-in wine cabinet—strategically placed for access from the living area—adds a touch of elegance and convenience.
Storage has been carefully considered throughout. Full-height cabinetry blends seamlessly into the walls, creating a clutter-free look while offering substantial storage capacity. A recessed shelving unit with integrated lighting acts as both a practical feature and a curated display space — ideal for personal touches without disrupting the overall minimalism. A thoughtful flow connects the kitchen to the dining and living spaces, encouraging sociability and enhancing the sense of openness. A small breakfast bench tucked behind the island provides an additional casual seating option without encroaching on circulation space.
The colour palette is a masterclass in restraint with impact. Cool-toned cabinetry contrasts beautifully with the crisp white Silestone worktops and walls, while hints of soft colour add playful yet controlled vibrancy.
